As photos of Tyra Banks surface of her with extra weight, the top model inspires positive body image by tackling the issue in her TV show. So, is Tyra Banks fat? Is that really a meaningful question?
With the recent tabloid frenzy over the photos of Tyra Banks in a bathing suit and, gasp, 20 pounds heavier, she inspires millions by celebrating her curves instead of shunning them.
Her show on February 19th, 2007, marked the 10-year anniversary of her cover shoot in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. She was the first African-American model to ever grab the spot and, in commemorating Black History Month, she launched a contest to allow others to celebrate their accomplishments.
She asked viewers to send in their 10-year stories about how far they’ve come. The winner will be off to the Bahamas on the vacation of a lifetime, in celebration of their milestone.
The “SO WHAT!” campaign has also been launched, where women empower other women by sending in videos of their own stories. Audience members will don the same red bathing suit that Tyra wore on the cover of Sports Illustrated, which will bear their own weight on the chest.
The show will air on Wednesday February 28th, 2007, and talks about that photo shoot and how it changed things for her and so many other women around the world.
And she doesn’t stop there. Monday’s show will follow Tyra and body image expert Jessica Weiner as they visit an eating disorders clinic. Tyra “personally escorts another woman who suffers from Bulimia to a facility to get her help, and gives viewers an exclusive look inside the walls of an eating disorder treatment center.”
