Sometimes doing creative exercises can help you get out of your disordered eating thoughts
Recovering from an eating disorder is not only difficult, it’s hard work. Their are ups and downs, twists and turns and nothing is predictable.
But there are things you can do to help make the transition from eating disorder to recovery a little bit easier. Getting creative is one way to give yourself something else to think about than weight, diet or calories.
The projects can be simple or elaborate, as long as they get your mind turning on new ideas. Be crazy, be wild, be truthful.
Following are some creative things to do if you need to do something imaginative:
- write your own autobiography
- pen a poem
- sketch a friend (or a stranger)
- observe people while sitting on a park bench, and make up stories about who they are and what their life’s like
- free write whatever you’re thinking
- move without music to the dance your body wants to dance
- pretend you’re a song writer and write the next pop hit (or another genre of music)
- plant your garden in an interesting and pleasing arrangement
- collect all of the knick-knacks around your house and make something with them
- collage your dream wardrobe
- pick up a craft book and make something you’ve never tried before
- cook a meal that you like and arrange it like it’s being served at a fine dining establishment
- watch a film and then write your own review
- do karaoke by yourself with your oldest and cheesiest CD’s
The possibilities are endless. Write your own list of wacky and unique things to do that will get you out of your mind.
