One size does not fit all in this stylish Vancouver boutique
The average retail store sizes don’t go above the low double digits. A vast majority of shoppers, though, won’t fit into those sizes. Thank goodness for stores like Bodacious in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Although the size zero debate still rages, the ultra thin ideal is being continuously challenged by forward-thinking individuals like Barb and Lorna, the store owners.
These two gals have set up shop on Main Street to great aplomb. The eye-catching exterior and charming interior are welcoming to any woman, regardless of size. While somer retailers create an intimidating atmosphere for shoppers over a size 8, the two cousins have accomplished something shocking: established a comfortable environment for everyone.
Although the clothing lines they carry focus on sizes 10-24, there is much in the store for every-woman. Accessories, books, beauty products, occasion and postcards, and tasteful bags, all sit delightfully on the shelves.
Local designers fill the racks with clothing you thought you could only get if you were a few sizes smaller. They are sassy, funky and refreshing. Who came up with the concept that the chicest styles had to only be made for tiny bodies?
The store also adheres to a sizing chart that flows throughout. The frustrating ordeal of going from store to store only to find that your size has somehow shifted from an 8 to a 12, is over. Designers are given a chart to abide by that makes sure all sizing is uniform.
They have snagged some fantastic local designers in the process. Not “plus sized” or “large” designers, but creators who make classy, yet fun clothing that is made for women who can fill them out.
Mitzylaneous Debris uses soft fabrics to put together the flattering line. With a belief in celebrating the goddess within, the active pieces will make you proud to have curves. On the naughty but nice side, Sweet Soul Designs specializes in burlesque-style goodies. From lacey bloomers to Nymphet Knickers, dare to let your playful side rule.
The Bodacious line has been in the works and was officially launched in June 2007. Enchanting dresses like the Cherrybomb (a denim treat with red accents) and the Kimono Dress (a popular style full of grace) are worth a look. The staple Wrap Dress is a comfortable favorite, along with the newbie Summer Dress, which can be worn off the shoulders.
Visiting the store is a must, as the fabulous staff will charm your pants off (possibly into one of their cute dresses). Bodacious is filled to the brim with energy and a trip inside is always an invigorating affair. Don’t be shy, celebrate your curves!
